Teach Your First Concept
Your Challenge
Explain one thing you know well to someone who doesn’t—and make it click.
Pick any topic you understand. Teach it to a friend, family member, or even yourself in the mirror. The goal? Make someone say “Oh, NOW I get it!”
What You’ll Experience
In just 30 minutes, you’ll:
- Break down complex ideas into simple steps
- Use AI to find different teaching approaches
- Discover what makes explanations actually work
- Feel the satisfaction of making something click
This gives you the experience of teaching. The full project starts with planning your tutoring business.
The Simple Process
Step 1: Pick Your Topic (3 minutes)
Choose something you know well:
- A math concept you finally understood
- How to do something in a game
- A cooking technique
- A sports move
- Any app or tool you use
Pick something you could explain without notes.
Step 2: Find Your Student (2 minutes)
Who will you teach?
- A younger sibling or cousin
- A parent who’s curious
- A friend who’s struggling
- Even yourself (record it!)
Someone who genuinely doesn’t know this yet.
Step 3: Plan Your Explanation (5 minutes)
Ask ChatGPT:
I need to teach [topic] to [person and their age/background].
They don't understand it yet.
Give me:
1. Three different ways to explain this concept
2. A simple analogy that might help
3. One hands-on activity to make it stick
4. What confusion to watch out forPick the approach that feels most natural to you.
Step 4: Teach It (15 minutes)
- Start with “This is like…” (use the analogy)
- Break it into 3 simple steps
- Check understanding: “What part makes sense so far?”
- Let them try the hands-on part
- Adjust when you see confusion
Remember: If they don’t get it, that’s feedback on your explanation, not their intelligence.
Step 5: Refine Your Approach (5 minutes)
After teaching, ask your student:
- What clicked for you?
- What part was still confusing?
- How would you explain it to someone else?
Ask AI: “My student understood [this part] but got stuck on [that part]. How can I explain it better?”
Your Teaching Checklist
✓ Did you make something complex feel simple?
✓ Did your student have an “aha” moment?
✓ Did AI help you find better explanations?
✓ Could your student explain it back to you?
Congratulations! You just discovered you can teach—and teaching is just helping someone see what you see.
