Figure out what “your voice” sounds like—so you know when AI is writing for you instead of with you.

Mark up an old essay to spot your patterns, then compare what you found to what AI finds.

This is a 30-minute preview of the Write With AI, Not Through It project.

What You’ll Experience

In just 30 minutes, you’ll:

  • Discover the patterns that make YOUR writing sound like you
  • Use AI to analyze your style without letting it rewrite you
  • Compare your observations to AI’s analysis
  • Create a voice reference to check future essays against

This is Day 1 of the full method. The complete project shows you how to write entire essays with AI as your thinking partner.

The Simple Process

Step 1: Mark Up Your Essay (10 minutes)

First: Open an old essay and make a copy (so you have one clean version for AI later).

In your COPY: Read it out loud and mark it up:

Highlight in YELLOW: Sentences that sound like you talking Highlight in BLUE: Words/phrases you use more than once Underline: Your longest sentence and your shortest sentence

Then write at the bottom:

My tone feels: (casual / formal / in-between)
One word I would NEVER use:

Look at all that highlighting. Those are YOUR patterns.

Step 2: Get AI’s Analysis (5 minutes)

Now open your CLEAN copy (no highlighting) and paste it into ChatGPT or Claude:

Analyze my writing style using examples from my text.

[Paste clean essay]

Show me:
1. Sentence length patterns - give 3 examples
2. Words/phrases I use repeatedly - quote where
3. My tone - quote specific sentences showing this
4. One distinctive thing about my voice with proof

Step 3: Compare What You Found (5 minutes)

Open your marked-up essay and AI’s analysis side by side.

Answer:

  • Did AI find the same repeated words you highlighted in blue?
  • Did AI’s “tone” match what you wrote?
  • What did you catch that AI missed?
  • What did AI notice that you didn’t highlight?

Save both: Your marked-up version AND AI’s analysis. You’ll check future essays against this to catch when AI’s voice replaces yours.
